An Actor Prepares is the most famous acting training book ever to have been written and the work of Stanislavski has inspired generations of actors and trainers. This translation was the first to introduce Stanislavski's 'system' to the English speaking world and has stood the test of time in acting classes to this day. Stanislavski here deals with the inward preparation an actor must undergo in order to explore a role to the full. He introduces the concepts of the 'magic if' units and objectives, of emotion memory, of the super-objective and many more now famous rehearsal aids. Now available in the Bloomsbury Revelations series to mark the 150th anniversary of Stanislavski's birth, this is an essential read for actors, directors and anyone interested in the art of drama.

The Republic
http://www.bookshd.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/fb38e365c385.jpg
The Republic (c. 380 bc.), by Plato, is a philosophical dialogue about the nature of justice and the order and character of the just City-State and the just individual. The dialogues, among Socrates and various Athenians and foreigners, discuss the meaning of justice, and examine whether or not the just man is happier than the unjust man, by proposing a society ruled by philosopher-kings and the guardians; hence the Republic's original Ancient Greek title: Politeía (City-State Governance). Moreover, in the dialogues, the Classical Greek philosopher Plato also discusses the theory of forms, the immortality of the soul, and the roles of the philosopher and of poetry in society. The Republic, Plato’s best-known work, proved one of the most intellectually and historically influential works of philosophy and political theory.

The Design of Everyday Things
http://www.bookshd.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/9b0694806b6a.jpg
Even the smartest among us can feel inept as we fail to figure out which light switch or oven burner to turn on, or whether to push, pull, or slide a door. The fault, argues this ingenious—even liberating—book, lies not in ourselves, but in product design that ignores the needs of users and the principles of cognitive psychology. The problems range from ambiguous and hidden controls to arbitrary relationships between controls and functions, coupled with a lack of feedback or other assistance and unreasonable demands on memorization. The Design of Everyday Things shows that good, usable design is possible. The rules are simple: make things visible, exploit natural relationships that couple function and control, and make intelligent use of constraints. The goal: guide the user effortlessly to the right action on the right control at the right time.
In this entertaining and insightful analysis, cognitive scientist Don Norman hails excellence of design as the most important key to regaining the competitive edge in influencing consumer behavior. Now fully expanded and updated, with a new introduction by the author, The Design of Everyday Things is a powerful primer on how—and why—some products satisfy customers while others only frustrate them.

The Ring of Truth: Myths of Sex and Jewelry
http://www.bookshd.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/f19d6a283381.jpg
From Shakuntala to Scheherazade to Marilyn Monroe, from Ancient India and Greece to Medieval Europe to modern cinema, sexual desire and jewelry, particularly rings, have been very often connected. Why do jewels keep appearing in stories about marriage and adultery, love and betrayal, loss and recovery, identity and masquerade? What is the mythology that makes finger rings symbols of true (or, as the case may be, untrue) love across the world? Wendy Doniger’s new book offers a riveting cross-cultural history of jewelry and its role in seduction, romance and infidelity. Few writers could begin with personal family anecdotes, shift to Sanskrit and Greek epics and the plays of Kalidasa and Shakespeare, make detours into fairy tales and folklore, return to Hollywood films and modern pop songs and still maintain a coherent, illuminating and supremely entertaining discussion. Yet that is precisely what Wendy Doniger accomplishes in this lively and penetrating examination of the enduring power of myth as revealed through stories about jewels, sex and clever women. The Ring of Truth, like all of Wendy Doniger’s books, is an astonishing and hugely satisfying work of scholarship rendered in compulsively readable prose.

My Name Is Red
http://www.bookshd.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/30b990ed31b3.jpg
My Name Is Red is one of the best-known books by Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk. It relates the story of miniaturists during the period of the Ottoman Empire in 1591.
The Sultan commissions that a great book be penned, honouring his life and empire. It is to be illustrated by the best artists of the day, and be styled in the European fashion. This is to be done in utmost secrecy: not even the group of artists are allowed to know whom they are working for. However, one of the miniaturists soon gets murdered, and the cause as well as the perpetrator of the crime remains unknown.
My Name Is Red is penned in the typical postmodern style, with an eccentric pattern of narration. Pamuk employs a wide variety of objects and characters to narrate the story: the corpse of the murdered artist, a coin, Satan, two dervishes, and the color red. Each of these narrators serve to portray the philosophical system of 16th century Istanbul. The events take place over a span of 9 days during the reign of Ottoman Sultan Murat III.
The book was published in the year 2011 by Faber, and is available in paperback.
Key Features:
- The book received the International IMPAC award in 2003.

Modern Classics Ways of Seeing (Penguin Modern Classics)
http://www.bookshd.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/48cf78201f81.jpg
Ways of Seeing (Penguin Modern Classics) is a history, theory and criticism book written by John Berger. This book is based on a TV show on the BBC TV series with John Berger. This book was also made with the help of Richard Hollis, Michael Dibb, Chris Fox and Sven Blomberg. It explores an exclusive way of looking at art.
A person's vision comes before their words, that is, a child may see and recognize something before they can learn how to speak and say it. It is vision that creates and helps people understand their surroundings in the world. It helps readers place themselves in the world. Some try to explain the world with words but they cannot undo the fact that they are surrounded by it. The association between people's vision for something and people's knowledge for something is never established.
It consists of seven essays with images and words. The first four are said to have both words and images while the other three essays only have images. This book has helped contribute to the feminist readings in pop culture. It has essays that spotlight the portrayal of women in oil paintings and advertisements.
Ways of Seeing (Penguin Modern Classics) by John Berger was published by Penguin UK in 2008. This book is available in paperback.
Key Features:
- It can be used as a textbook for visual culture and art-history studies in university.
- This book has received positive review from critics.

The Complete MAUS

The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman - the Pulitzer prize-winning Holocaust survivor story
'The most affecting and successful narrative ever done about the Holocaust'
Wall Street Journal
'The first masterpiece in comic book history' The New Yorker
The Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus tells the story of Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler's Europe, and his son, a cartoonist coming to terms with his father's story. Maus approaches the unspeakable through the diminutive. Its form, the cartoon (the Nazis are cats, the Jews mice), shocks us out of any lingering sense of familiarity and succeeds in 'drawing us closer to the bleak heart of the Holocaust' (The New York Times).
Maus is a haunting tale within a tale. Vladek's harrowing story of survival is woven into the author's account of his tortured relationship with his aging father. Against the backdrop of guilt brought by survival, they stage a normal life of small arguments and unhappy visits. This astonishing retelling of our century's grisliest news is a story of survival, not only of Vladek but of the children who survive even the survivors. Maus studies the bloody pawprints of history and tracks its meaning for all of us.
This combined, definitive edition includes Maus I: A Survivor's Tale and Maus II.
Art Spiegelman is a contributing editor and artist for the New Yorker. His drawings and prints have been exhibited in museums and galleries around the world. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Maus, and a Guggenheim fellowship. It was also nominated for the National Book Critics Award. His other books include: Breakdowns: From Maus to Now, an Anthology of Strips; The Wild Party; Open Me, I'm A Dog; Jack Cole and Plastic Man: Forms Stretched to Their Limits; In the Shadow of No Towers; Breakdowns: Portrait of the Artist as a Young %@&*!; Be a Nose; Jack and the Box and MetaMaus.

This book also talks about the 'Hook Model’ that involves a four step process focusing on consumer behaviour. This model talks about the reasons why few products catch our attention amongst an extensive range and the various brand strategies which work. Then, there is the concept of 'hook cycles’ which deals with bringing people back to the products again and again even without the use of regular advertising. Wild: A Journey from Lost to Found
http://www.bookshd.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/07/7acad8d45554.jpg
At twenty-six, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's rapid death from cancer, her family disbanded and her marriage crumbled. With nothing to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to walk eleven-hundred miles of the west coast of America - from the Mojave Desert, through California and Oregon, and into Washington state - and to do it alone. She had no experience of long-distance hiking and the journey was nothing more than a line on a map. But it held a promise - a promise of piecing together a life that lay in ruins at her feet. Strayed's account captures the agonies - both mental and physical - of her incredible journey; how it maddened and terrified her, and how, ultimately, it healed her. Wild is a brutal memoir of survival, grief and redemption: a searing portrayal of life at its lowest ebb and at its highest tide.

Travels with Charley (Penguin Modern Classics)
In 1960, John Steinbeck set out to rediscover and document his native land; accompanied only by his dog, he travelled all across the United States in a pick-up truck. This Penguin Classics edition of Travels with Charley includes an introduction by Jay Parini. When he was almost sixty years old, worried that he might have lost touch with the sights, the sounds and the essence of America's people, Steinbeck took note of his itchy feet and prepared to travel. He was accompanied by his French poodle, Charley, diplomat and watchdog, across the states of America from Maine to California. Moving through the woods and deserts, dirt tracks and highways to large cities and glorious wildernesses, Steinbeck observed - with remarkable honesty and insight, with a humorous and sometimes sceptical eye - America, and the Americans who inhabited it. What he saw was a lonely, generous nation too packed with individuals for single judgements; what he saw made him proud, angry, sympathetic and elated. His vision of how the world was changing still speaks to us prophetically through the decades. John Steinbeck (1902-68), winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize for literature, is remembered as one of the greatest and best-loved American writers of the twentieth century. During the Second World War Steinbeck served as a war correspondent, his journalism later collected in Once There Was a War (1958), and he was awarded the Norwegian Cross of Freedom for his portrayal in The Moon is Down (1942) of Resistance efforts in northern Europe. His best-known works include the epics The Grapes of Wrath (1939) and East of Eden (1952), and his tragic novella Of Mice and Men (1937). John Steinbeck's complete works are published in Penguin Modern Classics. If you enjoyed Travels with Charley, you might like Cannery Row, also available in Penguin Modern Classics. Chai, Chai: Travels in Places Where you Stop But Never Get Off
Some years ago, a book was published that would change the way one looks at railway junctions forever.
Bishwanath Ghosh had got down at Itarsi junction to grab a cup of chai while travelling from Kanpur to Chennai. Sipping on the tea, as he heard the recorded voice announcing the arrivals and delays of the many trains that pass through the station, it struck him that while Itarsi junction connects the length and breadth of India on the rail map, almost nothing is known about Itarsi, the town.
Thus began Ghosh’s quest to tell the story of the towns behind some of the country’s biggest junctions: Itarsi, Mughal Sarai, Jhansi, Shoranur, Arakkonam and Jolarpettai places that are always a stopover and never a destination; familiar and yet unknown.
Chai, Chai, a definitive work on small-town India, went on to become an instant success and continues to draw readers with its abundant wit and charm.
Nanda Devi: A Journey to the Last Sanctuary
The fascinating story of a journey to the source of a legend – the Nanda Devi Sanctuary – which has been described by explorers as ‘more inaccessible than the North Pole’.
Until 1934 the hidden valley of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary, on the border between India and Tibet, had never been entered by human beings. Surrounded by 20,000-foot peaks, which effectively seal off Mt Nanda Devi at their centre, it remains virtually impenetrable even today.
Many early explorers, drawn there by the idea of a ‘lost Eden’ in the Himalaya, could only gaze with longing at the Sanctuary – until the ‘terrible-twins’ of pre-Second World War mountaineering, Eric Shipton and Bill Tillman, solved the problem by forcing an entrance up a precipitous river gorge. Subsequent expeditions were beset by tragedy and concern that the fragile ecology of the Sanctuary might be damaged; until, for curious reasons involving the CIA- – which the first edition of this book revealed – the Indian government finally decided to ban all visitors. The Sanctuary was briefly reopened in 2000 for a special millennium expedition, of which Hugh Thomson was a part.
Thomson weaves the story of this last journey to the Sanctuary together with those who have gone before him, and gives a tantalizing account of a place described by explorers as ‘more inaccessible than the North Pole’.

The Snow Leopard
A writer by profession and explorer by heart, Peter Matthiessen along with a field biologist, George Schaller set out on the journey of a lifetime in the year 1973, to the Crystal Mountain on the Tibetan plateau. While the exploration aimed to study the wild blue sheep, they secretly aspired to spot the snow leopard - a rare animal that is found along these regions. What follows is an account of an adventurous journey, across the length and breadth of the mountains, in the heart of wilderness, and it has been quoted to be a true pilgrimage.
The Snow Leopard transports its readers to the Himalayan mountains, as the author mesmerises you with his words. He recounts his journey in each chapter of the book, and the book is an engaging travel book. The Snow Leopard was first published in 1978. It is available in paperback and was published by RHUK in 1998.
Key Features:
- This book is the winner of a National Book Award in the category of Contemporary Thought in 1979, and National Book Award winner for Nonfiction in 1980.
- It is listed as one of the best travel books ever written, and appears in World Hum's ten most celebrated books.
Chandni Chowk: The Mughal City of Old Delhi
What we know today as Chandni Chowk was once a part of one of the greatest cities of the world—the imperial city established by the Mughal emperor Shahjahan in the seventeenth century and named after him—Shahjahanabad. This is the story of how the city came to be established, its grandeur as the capital of an empire at its peak and its important role in shaping the language and culture of North India. It is also the story of the many tribulations the city has seen—the invasion of Nadir Shah, the Revolt of 1857, Partition.Today, Shahjahanabad has been subsumed under the gigantic sprawl of metropolitan Delhi. Yet it has an identity that is distinct. Popularly known as Chandni Chowk, its name conjures up romantic narrow streets, a variety of street food and exotic markets. For Shahjahanabad is still very much a living city, though the lives of the people inhabiting it have changed over the centuries. Dariba Kalan still has rows of flourishing jewelers' shops; Begum Samru’s haveli is now Bhagirath Palace, a sprawling electronics market and no visit to Chandni Chowk is complete without a meal at Karim’s, whose chefs use recipes handed down to them through the ages for their mouth-watering biriyani and kebabs. Swapna Liddle draws upon a wide variety of sources, such as the accounts of Mughal court chroniclers, travellers’ memoirs, poetry, newspapers and government documents, to paint a vivid and dynamic panorama of the city from its inception to recent times.

• Levison is hugely promotable and will support publication with TV, radio and press interviews as well as a nationwide speaking tour.
• Publication will coincide with Levison's next Channel 4 documentary Walking the Himalayas.
• 'A show very much in the Bear Grylls groove' -- Matt Baylis, Daily Express
• A charging hippopotamus, an attack by heavily armed militiamen and the loss of a colleague were just a few of the travails endured by a former Parachute Regiment officer who has become the first person to walk the length of the Nile.' -- Ben Farmer, Daily Telegraph
• 'It's an eventful journey, and not always pleasantly so: this early part of the trek is marred by a mugging and by genuine tragedy.' -- TV Choice, Guardian
• 'Levison Wood gets a lot more than he bargained for in his drama-filled TV-tie in Walking the Nile. The book is actually better than the show, giving Wood space to explore the locals lives and the dangerous politics of the countries he's trampling through' -- Wanderlust. Levison Wood's most challenging expedition yet begins along the Silk Road route of Afghanistan and travels through five countries. Following in the footsteps of the great explorers, Levison walks the entire length of the Himalayas in an adventure of survival and endurance. A personal story of discovery, Levison forges strong bonds with local guides, porters, mountain men, soldiers, farmers, smugglers and shepherds. By travelling on foot, and following the same footpaths that locals use, he uncovers stories that might otherwise remain hidden. Along the way he also reveals the history of the Himalayas and two millennia of exploration, and examines a continent in crisis in the 21st century. Packed with action and emotion, more than anything Walking the Himalayas is a story of personal adventure and striving beyond the limits of convention.
My Family and Other Animals (A Puffin Book)
An autobiographical account of the five years of his childhood between 1935 and 1939, My Family And Other Animals is written by the conservationist Gerald Durrell. These five years of his life were spent in a Greek island named Corfu, with his family. The family lived in three villas and thus, this book too is divided in three sections describing the life of his family there.
The Durrell family was comprised of different people with different temperaments. It includes Gerald’s widowed mother, sister Margo, brother Larry, gun-mad Leslie, and dog named Roger. The youngest among them is Gerald. There are also some absurd yet lovable characters in this book, some of which include Larry’s literary and artistic visitors, Gerald’s tutors, local peasants, the taxi-driver friend named Spiro, and Dr Theodore Stephanides.
My Family And Other Animals takes the readers through the journey of the family’s experiences on the island, the rich natural diversity of the island, and colourful villas. This book is an interesting account of the author’s childhood with a touch of humour and wit. It was published by Penguin UK in 2006, and is available in paperback format.

The Great Railway Bazaar (Penguin Modern Classics)
The Great Railway Bazaar is Paul Theroux’s account of his epic journey by rail through Asia. Filled with evocative names of legendary train routes – the Direct-Orient Express, the Khyber Pass Local, the Delhi Mail from Jaipur, the Golden Arrow to Kuala Lumpur, the Hikari Super Express to Kyoto and the Trans-Siberian Express – it describes the many places, cultures, sights and sounds he experienced and the fascinating people he met. Here he overhears snippets of chat and occasional monologues, and is drawn into conversation with fellow passengers, from Molesworth, a British theatrical agent, and Sadik, a shabby Turkish tycoon, while avoiding the forceful approaches of pimps and drug dealers. This wonderfully entertaining travelogue pays loving tribute to the romantic joys of railways and train travel.
Begums, Thugs and Englishmen
Fanny Parkes, who lived in India between 1822 and 1846, was the ideal travel writer - corageous, indefatigably curious and determinedly independent. Her delightful journal traces her journey from prim memsahib, married to a minor civil servant of the Raj, to eccentric sitar-playing Indophile, fluent in Urdu, critical of British rule and passionate in her appreciation of Indian culture. To read her is to get as close as one can to a true picture of early colonial India - the sacred and the profane, the violent and the beautiful, the straight-laced sahis and the more eccentric 'White Mughals' who fell in love with India and did their best, like Fanny, to build bridges across cultures.
Chasing the Monsoon
The fascinating and revealing story of Frater's journey through India in pursuit of the astonishing Indian summer monsoon. On 20th May the Indian summer monsoon will begin to envelop the country in two great wet arms, one coming from the east, the other from the west. They are united over central India around 10th July, a date that can be calculated within seven or eight days. Alexander Frater aims to follow the monsoon, staying sometimes behind it, sometimes in front of it, and everywhere watching the impact of this extraordinary phenomenon. During the anxious period of waiting, the weather forecaster is king, consulted by pie-crested cockatoos, and a joyful period ensues: there is a period of promiscuity, and scandals proliferate. Frater's journey takes him to Bangkok and the cowboy town on the Thai-Malaysian border to Rangoon and Akyab in Burma (where the front funnels up between the mountains and the sea). His fascinating narrative reveals the exotic, often startling, discoveries of an ambitious and irresistibly romantic adventurer.
Tirumala: Sacred Foods of God
The ritual of offering food or Naivedyam to Lord Venkateshwara – a manifestation of Lord Vishnu – at the Tirumala Temple has existed since eternity, when Lord Vishnu decided to descend on Earth in the archa form or as an idol that can be worshipped. He commissioned Sage Vaikhanasa to prepare the ancient religious text ‘Agama Shastra’, which gives an elaborate description of the rituals to be conducted in the Tirumala Temple, the ingredients to be used to prepare prasadams, procedures for a priest to follow, precautions to be taken and the Veda mantras to be recited at each step.
This volume gives an inside view of the ancient rituals of offering food to Lord Venkateshwara, which even today are practised according to the procedures prescribed by the Agama Shastra. It provides detailed descriptions of the various kinds of food offerings made, with specifications about the quantity, ingredients, preparation, variety of food and particular times when they should be served. The book covers all the food offerings made to the Gods from morning till evening, such as the major offerings of Bala Bhogam (in the morning), Raja Bhogam (during the day) and Shyana Bhogam (in the evening); offerings made on festivals and special days; offerings to other Gods in the temple; offerings made at the time of natural disasters and so on.
---- The highest authority in the Temple at Tirumala, Acharya Dikshitulu presents, for the first time, the most comprehensive research on foods offered at the Temple.
---- Explaining the elaborate processes of offering food at the Temple at Tirumala, co-author Kota Neelima demystifies the philosophy and rationale behind this age-old tradition.
---- Tirumala: Foods of God outlines the practice of offering food to the Lord, as specified by the Agama Shastra, the ancient science of rituals.
----The book provides detailed step-by-step recipes to prepare the various prasadams offered at the Tirumala Temple. Through illustrations, it shows the processes to prepare popular prasadams. The book also highlights the significance of every ingredient used in the prasadams.
----It gives the history of the earliest practices of food offering by kings and their dynasties at the Tirumala Temple, as mentioned in the inscriptions engraved on the walls of the Temple.
